Japan and greywashing war crime history. Name a more iconic duo.
When it comes to historical discussion of Unit 731, I always want everyone to remember that the U.S. of A. gave several of them immunity in exchange for joining the budding american biological weapons program. Like Operation Paperclip, but we talk about it a lot less.
And then the U.S. may or may not have used that 'knowledge' in the Korean war. Honestly, given that the tactics claimed to be used seem to be from Unit 731's playbook, seems like there's a pretty good chance it's true. Just no one pays it much attention because the only people complaining about it are those it presumably happened to—and no one's inclined to pay much attention to things North Koreans say, because, well, yeah. Crying wolf aesop and all that.
Now, of course, there's plenty of "everyone was being a little shit back then" to go around, and, at the same time, two wrongs don't make a right. Regardless, it's something to keep in mind when throwing shade at Japan for not owing up to their war crimes. We (in this case by 'we' I mean the anglosphere, roughly) do an
awful lot of 'not owing up' ourselves.
