@Nuppul they use the voice-to-text and text-to-voice function of Google translate, so it would also work without Airpods (with only the built-in mic and speakers for example).

...I would not count on this method for romance unless you are both fond of unintentional humour.

But I hear it sort of does work in a pinch, albeit quite fumblingly, for a lot of languages. Though most people just use speakerphone, for obvious reasons.
