sometimes these type of backstories are good for fleshing out characters but other times it's distasteful and just for the sake of the shock factor

This all happened on round 8. I don't think this is far fetched at all. All those happenings in the school will change you. And then this shit happens in your home, I don't think it would be far fetched that someone could snap in those conditions. Everyone would start thinking differently in this situations.
