@Chuepomi I'd find him more sus if he already understood why she has to play the games she's playing. Rather, he strikes me more as competent, since as prince/king he would need to be able to quickly figure out who's sincere and who is playing games as well as how best to work the quid pro quo.

That said, in a story about manipulating everyone around you for personal gain, having someone call your scam this early is definitely threatening.

(Korean novels are never consistent with western titles so I never know what to make of “my lord” or “miss”) But it seems like guard is the ML of we’re going by the cover art?

Honestly, he's shady with the sudden proposal, but I think he's less likely to be a "scummy kind of guy" because he's so forward about his proposal. I definitely don't think it's because he fell in "love" with the MC though. Cause he gets multiple benefits if he gets engaged with her.

1) This is two benefits in one, by making sure Theodore is successor, he gains a supporter and his rival losses one.
2) By protecting the original family from usurpation, he shows other nobles that he would also protect their bloodlines as well. Which means more supporters.
3) He gets a competent and attractive wife.

But yeah, still shady. Thanks for the chapter!

can someone explain to me why exactly she can't just, ya know, tell people what her step-mum and step-mum's evil spawnling have done thus far and get them all thrown out? I mean, even if events go public (which is doubtful, with non-corrupt nobility running the show stuff like that tends to get made hush hush and the bad nobles just...disappear...but if it does) she can paint the story that she was a young girl abused and afraid, but grew up and took back her own life
obviously she doesn't talk about the whole reincarnated person and story world events side of things, but they've already done enough bad stuff, physical and mental abuse, keeping her out of society, almost certainly abusing the position she is probably meant to hold until her brother's return and wasting her family's assets (they seem to have been buying a LOT of dresses jewelry etc for miss no noble blood spawnling while they obviously haven't been buying her anything after all). shouldn't she be able to get help and get them kicked out now it's been made clear she's not ill or stupid?
but no, she hides the fact she (well, or at least her body before she incarnated/remember her past life) was abused by step-mum and aims for living free? I mean, if she was planning a more personal revenge, I'd get it, but she seems to just want to escape them and live freely, so why not get help asap?

@InsaneInsomniac I think it’s because most people wouldn’t care. What do they have to gain by helping her? What if people end up siding with the stepmom? She is the eldest daughter but has only just recently returned to society, therefore she doesn’t really have much power. The stepmom is still the head of the house but she too is still looking for more connections. I feel the female lead can make a deal as the next head of the house but because she just suddenly fully recovered from her illness, she hasn’t shown what she is capable of for people to trust her. They’re more likely to manipulate or use her. You also mentioned about the physical abuse from before reincarnation and well that means there’s no hard evidence it happened. I think it was smart of her to reach out to the imperial family to get close and get some backing. What the 2nd prince just offered though is troubling bc that means involving herself and entering a war zone for the crown prince seat.
