Is it because of the Patriarchy that the men in these type of novels never see women as a potential threat? Like the princess, every women in the whole capital knows she will destroy the entire family of any girl who try to get near "her man" but this love sick idiot doesn't put two and two together and realize his doctor's sudden coldness is directly related to the princess visit. Is he really clueless to her true nature when every woman in the city knows? She even out right told him the princess came and gave and uncomfortably generous gift. And what does he do? Puts a even bigger target on her back by taking her to a fancy restaurant meal the next day. You bet your bottom dollar that's going to be the talk of the town and get back to the Princess. Not to mention it's not exactly a secret the good doctor is a girl, it would only take the laziest of inquiries to find out her background.

@PeachyBee I agree, it's not cute. That kind of possessive behavior of a man to a women he has not even made clear a readership/dating/courting is a red flag. Heck even when your dating that's some unhealthy controlling behavior.

@Lioness94 Yes, ML in romances are often made to be these geniuses in everything but romance.

There's also the fact that in feudal society's positions of power are gained more often than not by nepotism. That and a superior education and opportunities due to the family he was born in. It's not like he joined the army as a young man and worked his way up the ranks as a NCO, no he was probably went to some elite military school and given an position as an officer from the start. So being a general isn't that impressive to me. For all I know the emperor directly gave him the title on a whim like the Roman Emperor Caligula made his horse a senator.
