As much as I get where you're coming from, I think a lot of people (especially Americans but not only) don’t realize how saying “just go to therapy” can come off as… privileged and kind of out of touch?
Just like in Japan, I live in a developed country, come from a middle-class family, and I still can’t even imagine being able to afford regular therapy. And beyond the cost, therapy culture really isn’t the same everywhere. Where I live (minutes away from a capital city) it’s hard enough to even find a licensed therapist who isn’t focused on couples or children.
I’m not saying Japan doesn’t have major issues with how it handles mental health but sometimes it’s less about people ignoring an “obvious” solution and more about the fact that… there’s no system in place (or at least, the options are highly limited), not much support nor infrastructure, or time afterwork and often people would rather buy themselves some food rather than an overly expensive therapist.
Anyway, it’s not that deep, I know, but since I see the “just go to therapy” comment pop up so often, I figured it’s worth pointing out that it’s not always that simple
