Doesn't make them "capitalist" enough to only be "LARPing as a commune".
And yes, "communism with capitalistic characteristics" is a thing, not just a meme. It just doesn't involve heavy management from the state.
(in that sense though, China sounds more capitalistic than the US and Europe)

Though, to be fair, China is a mess, not just "communism" and "capitalism" here. Same goes for Vietnam, its neighbor, and even more so with Russia, another of its neighbor.
