If the author actually played a mmo he would know that the classes that cheese the fight by debuffs or whatnot will be the highest demand instead of dps. Sure it is not flashy but you will always be in demand compared to the run of the mill dps main.

I think some people are misunderstanding the context of this world
This world basically has turned adventure quests into Twitch streaming prioritizing entertainment over strength. Even when people know that the the black mage debuffs would be stronger, they would prefer to watch a white mage buff their teammates. Because seeing a team fight faster/stronger/etc. is way more cool than seeing enemies just become slow/blind/etc. while the team kills them easily.
It's not about strength here, but style and popularity.

So i take it this is one of those stories where the guy people think did nothing was the one that let the rest of the party reach the top rankings. If thats the case then i really look forward to more of this honestly. I like the whole concept of the guy deemed trash being essential as the rest of the group fails without him.

I'm gonna be honest with you, this kind of trope/plot has been overly done now

It's not that they think he's not doing anything, it's that they don't actually know how effective the things he's doing are.
If they were to actually do the exact same thing with and without him, on screen at the same time or right after eachother, they would probably be able to tell, but they don't, and they don't have any reference to how helpful he actually is, so they think he's not helpful.

Well if they don't know, more reason for them to stfu

It's a nice attempt at explaining why his class is disliked. However, the writer dropped the ball by saying it was disliked even before dungeons became entertainment. Because it makes no sense. The black mage gives you a massive advantage over your enemies. Writers need to really stop trying to treat any class as useless or disliked or something. No class is like that. Ever. Even worse is when they make up a "bad" class and the first guy to have it with a touch of sense can become OP. Are we really supposed to believe that literally everyone was just too stupid to realize something like, I dunno, carrying multiple enhancement items at once in your inventory as a carrier class is massively effective? That's ridiculous.
