Well, they are also stugying chemistry, so...
What I could get from the series up to now is that it's not a medieval themed fantasy, but rather a somewhat modern fantasy but, as it has magic, stuff like swords and castles and lots of medieval stuff are still a thing, probably because all "scientific" stuff is focused on the magic studies.
