(I had to read this on another site to have all the translated chapters available.)
In the end, I honestly don't know exactly how I feel about this story. There are a lot of really good things about it, but there are also quite a few parts that genuinely made me want to skip ahead. And honestly, the last 40 or so chapters were painful to read.
The beginning is really fun. Having the main character be this extremely capable swordswoman who has already lived through all kinds of political situations and was even an empress at one point makes it feel like nothing is really out of her reach. The jokes early on were great, and the whole arc where she was training him as a pet was really interesting.
But things started getting a little more complicated after he became human again.
Honestly, I think the story might have been more fun if it had kept that pet-play vibe going for longer. Maybe he could have NOT lost some, or even all, of his memories from when he was a wolf. But whatever, it was still pretty fun for a while.
Personally, one of the things I enjoyed the most was how the story would sometimes stop and actually let you think about the situation between the two of them and what could possibly be done to solve it. And honestly, it was great that I couldn't come up with a clear answer myself.
I just feel like, toward the end, her seemingly unshakable intelligence started taking a back seat, and her abilities as a master swordswoman were shown less and less. But I think the worst part was the arc where the truth was finally revealed.
Sure, he clearly suffered, and she was somewhat cold toward him at first. But she eventually genuinely started caring about him and showing it. She made it extremely clear that there was someone she loved, that this person had died, and that she had promised him that as long as he continued loving her, she would keep trying to love him until those feelings became real...
So honestly, the way he started treating her afterward felt bizarrely disproportionate... He genuinely started wanting to psychologically torture her, and it was honestly torture for me as a reader too, having to sit through a bunch of shitty side stories in the middle of all that. I skipped a lot of them...
I've never been a huge fan of him, because he was honestly kind of boring and didn't really have anything particularly special about him, and he was wayyyyy too needy. But those final chapters were something else. He never really seemed to stop and consider what someone who had spent an entire lifetime suffering might actually be feeling... He never considered that this was why she distanced herself SO MUCH from him at the beginning, and how difficult it must be for her to love him, and yet she was trying so hard...
On top of that, the ending felt way too rushed. They forgave each other far too quickly, and the ending left me with this weird bitter feeling that they still hate each other and love each other at the same time, but are going to stay together anyway.
Anyway, I think the story is good. 8/10.
Personally, I just think they threw most of the comedy in the trash, nerfed the protagonist way too much, and ended the story on a much more depressing note than it needed to.
I really wish the revenge against the nobles and the king, as well as studying and rebuilding her original people, had been a much bigger part of the story. The story felt so unique at the beginning, but gradually became much more conventional.
It could have at least ended with her becoming Empress again. Considering the whole story's themes about misogyny and the way men looked down on women simply for existing, seeing her reclaim the throne while having her husband by her side, becoming one of the strongest and smartest people in the kingdom, would have been incredibly satisfying. I don't know, man. Honestly, even if the story had gone completely insane and thrown in a few furry scenes, I think that would've been more entertaining than ending on such a depressing note.
