So far, the king's behaved decently. Feels like he wouldn't be part of betraying ML, so he should jail the noble in order for the hero not thinking the king was involved. Because believing a thing like this could be kept secret would be naive.
So telling the hero now is only smart.

Why wait. Don't allow the scummy nobles to come up with more #ssholery. Create a vivid object lesson with that duke. Say anyone else with good ideas should think twice, and then go after the demons.
Also, I'm guessing the nobles are an easy source of XP?

Still weird. Why would anyone try to risk getting the hero, and potentially the ML if he survives, as enemies just because ML is strong?

Nah Mahtan continued to dig his "I'm wrong" hole ever deeper is what's happening here.
It's objectively stupid of the duke not to check what the relationship between ML and hero is like before selling out ML.
There's not even a real upside to include ML in the rumourmongering.
All they did was add extra unnecessary risk to the objective.
And sure, there's no doubt other stuff going on, too.
I'm just hoping we don't get sh#t storytelling like the shield hero now. I'll break out in hives if I think about that "it's better if they're slaves" thing that idiot had (has, right? It's still ongoing?).
