Something rare makes money precisely because it is rare, if you make it common the price will fall, unless it is a consumable

@kaminomikan it's an herb, what it's used for we don't know, but it's safe to assume it's either a VERY rare spice or more likely an ingredient in something very useful, perhaps high tier potions or some such, possibly as a catalyst for magic instead/as well? whatever the case may be it is certain it is a consumable good, and, while mass producing it *will* drop the price, depending on what that use is how fresh they need to be kept for that use and the difficulty of actually distributing it, that price will probably not drop by nearly as much as you would think, remember there may be magic galore here, but there doesn't seem to be modern convivences like instant long distance communication or reliable mass transport for goods.

from what i've learned so far from other sources, if your land is in dire situation, what you SHOULD be planting first is food. Planting enough food to sustain life on land, cuz trading luxury items, which in this case are herbs, is not good since it will depend on the market, and the market is volatile, its reliable in terms of stability, so having a sustainable is better than sustainable trade...

TLDR; Food is better than herbs...

Wait, isn't it basically a cash crops, and with the territory situation before they should be lacking of food so why hell did the mc choose to plant cash crops instead of food?

@kaede023 because if that crop is both rare and valuable. They will have a sustainable source of income which they can then use to purchase food as well as supplies.

@Kaede023 You can buy anything you want, whether it be food, shelter, or military if you can basically print money. Of course you'd need enough strength to defend your territory but we all know the MC is capable.

@InsaneInsomniac @kaminomikan Well, it depends on the price elasticity of the demand.

Something like, say, saffron has extremely high elasticity, because it's not something people really need. If you make it too expensive, people just won't buy it. On the other hand, vital medicines have very low elasticity, because people will pay whatever price they have to in order to not die.

Since he seems to be the only one growing this (i.e. it "can't be bought"), he's got a monopoly on the supply here, so really he can sell it for any price he wants as long as he's careful to restrict the supply to a trickle that can't sustain a large secondary market. Since it's an herb, and therefore probably consumed by its intended use, this probably won't be hard.

"Nothing makes money like something too rare to be bought"
But an entire country producing it endlessly would make that value drop rather drastically...

that if you actually dump it in the market, and that it is a "free" market.... but what makes you think its a free market?

wtf is moongrass? weed?

and it looks like he's planning to be the sole distributor/producer or it
kinda lika druglord in some latin country

it's FRICKIN RARE and EXPENSIVE (it's not like narcotics are used in every house, that's why it's rare even with it's own plantation)

y'all, he's gonna basically have a monopoly, or dominate the market as one of few suppliers for moongrass, enough to be able to be the one setting the price (oligopoly). If he has enough market power to be the one who can set the price and bring people to shop from them, then even if they produced a billion moongrass plants they'd still be able to charge a lot for it. COMPETITION drives price down, so no matter how much moon grass he plants, the value doesn't drop just because there are a lot of it. It's the amount on the market. If he's the sole or one of few sources of moongrass, doesn't matter how much he has; he controls how much is on the MARKET which means he can artificially make it super rare to obtain.

MC should definitely also make some farmland to be able to sustain their own food source, but making food be their primary use of land will not generate enough income for the get rich scheme he's going for. Those markets are saturated and will not have as much demand.

If moongrass generates SO MUCH income and has long term monopoly potential, then he can use the income from it to buy food for trade.

This is why people should take an intro econ class at some point in their lives :3 It makes us all better, more informed citizens living life in this world!
