the issue is the world doesn't work like manga, people so handsome that everyone would fall over themselves to ask out would have been handsome with or without a simple haircut.

Never underestimate the influence of style (or lack thereof) in attraction. For example balding is a problem, but going bald is a choice. Going bald raises your attractiveness levels much more than a combover.

Same for that bowl cut a few chapters ago, that yee yee ass haircut really turns people off.
