Feel like translated this word they talking about as "look up to" doesn't work. it feel very weird that Kanon so work up at that exactly word, and the teacher explain it in a way that lead to "you are asking for advise for love, isn't it". it way to lean on the side of "want to be like someone" and doesn't have an ounce of romantic sense to it.

Maybe it do have that mean in Japanese, but hey, that why we not translate as machine, word to word, right.

I think this actually makes a lot of sense for Kanon to be struggling so much with, because she's mostly just been considering socializing and communicating with other people through the lens of her disability, she hasn't really had a chance to interrogate her own feelings and everything else thats not directly related to her hearing issues.

Meanwhile Saki is like the inverse and has been hyper aware of her own sexuality and how that's shaping her relationships past and present with different people, and so now she's spent a lot of the manga learning how to consider how disabilities also shape relationships and communication.

So really they're both starting at opposite ends and working towards meeting each other in the middle where they can both understand and be understood by one another.

So this has to be a "poor translation" thing, but looking up to someone does not in any way correlate to feelings of the heart in english.

It can be. Not in all cases, of course, but it's a common theme for a protagonist to get the feelings of "I want to be like her" and "I want her" confused.

It probably happens in Yuri way more often than it happens in real life, to be fair, but I can name about a dozen Yuri manga examples just in recent memory.

Man Kuzushiro is just completely tuned into the queer experience, “I don’t love her I just wanna be like her” is such a classic. Glad Kanon isn’t getting stuck on that step though, it seems like she’s well on the path to putting the last few pieces together.

This was a concern Galaxy brought up while we were working on the chapter. But since we finished the work reeaalllyy late, we set it aside. I’ve now updated the pages and changed it to “admire”.

Even though I usually see the TL as more faithful to the Japanese and the official release as a more elegant rewrite, this one could’ve been avoided (Galaxy feels bad ^^).
