Is it okay to complain since I am 51 chapters in? Incoming rant. Shin’s character is really bland. The only thing we’ve really gotten is that he wants to go home, he is kind, kind of clumsy, and has this secret edgy side to him. He feels like the typical mysterious MC with a dark past who has replaced his dark personality with a “kinder” one but still has that edgy side in him lurking to come out when the time calls for it. Other than that, Shin feels empty. He is generic in his values and has no other goals really.
His disregard for this world is also really irking, not sure if this is the TL’s fault but calling his original world the “real world” implies that this world is fake despite the very real people there. He would abandon Schnee and the others for a world he may not even be able to return to. And god knows how long he has been gone or if he would even be alive in his original world.
To compare, look at Subaru from ReZero. His goal is to be Emilia’s knight and make her king but it also goes a lot deeper than that. He is forced to confront his death innumerable times, forced to face his failures and inadequacies, and grow from his hardships over and over again. In contrast, Shin hasn’t changed at all. He isn’t challenged at all. I don’t expect much from cookie cutter isekai’s but this one has wasted potential. I wanted a bit more here.
