They wouldn't misunderstand her this much if they weren't actually speaking Japanese.
For all their fancy research and whatnot, Japanese fiction authors tend not to realise that most languages aren't so prone to leaving things to "implication" as the Japanese language is.
Like the whole "We know about THAT" ruse... Downright clichéd in Japan, but just about anyone else, anywhere else, would ask "About what?"
