I agree he absolutely gave off those vibes. Here's this awesome dude we've never seen before and did you know that he's #1 in the Empire? He's super cool and super strong. Clearly a set up for the Worf Effect when you know he's about to go up against Mary Sue. That said I do not hate his addition to the world at all.

Since the translator notes mentioned he's manga original content, I just want to say thank goodness for OC. As a LN reader and anime watcher too this series is a rare time that I find the LN source to be the inferior version in most regards. The anime and manga add in so many characters to flesh out the world. The anime, now followed by the manga, has expanded upon the mages tools and how opposing nations have taken their technology in different directions. Every time you see a mage flying about using devices akin to flying vehicles, brooms, horses, armored legs, or skis you can be thankful for extra content because the LNs really do not concern themselves with these kind of details. As far as the books are concerned everyone is flying around like they did in chapter 1 of the manga.
Yeah no, I enjoy this guy's addition, just wish we got him earlier (say, when Tanya was at the military college and introduce the other knights that were bestowed the "von" names). As Greek myth buff, I like his poetry.

Seeing the differences between how the manga and the anime portrays Mary Sue is very interesting.

Manga Sue: Seems to be less of a berserker, more like an airheaded saint. Despite her words, she doesn't seem all that angry. Just... disappointed? Retains enough reason to effectively defend her allies, as well as allow her allies' magic to work on her.

Anime Sue: A true berserker, overflowing with rage. Completely irrational and barely willing to prevent friendly fire. Much more intimidating and with a greater sense of danger. It really felt like she was a complete wild card on the battlefield.

Regardless, with this chapter we finally see how OP Mary Sue is, as befits her name. And since the manga inflates everyone's power beyond both the light novel and the anime, it's extremely impressive.
Becoming a living operation orb... that elevates her head and shoulders above all other mages in the setting.

The anime and movie passed it AGES ago. The manga has an insane amount of original content. By the time we get season 2, the anime will STILL be beyond the manga.
True but the manga has tons of content that the anime lacks and it gives context and foresight to the story that makes what is happening even more delicious.

The Bard had more charisma and is more lovable than Mary Sue.
I wish he would, at most, got heavily injured instead of outright ded.
