That happy fire lance spam is me in any video game with magic. Even when I played Skyrim unmodded that first time, and magic honestly kind of sucks without mods to help rebalance it a bit, I still had to run around flinging spells at everything. Took excessive joy in basically running through caves like a human flamethrower while bandits and local wildlife were fleeing from me. Every time I ever tried to handle things the other ways around for a different experience, I'd end up bored and back to chucking lightning bolts in like ten minutes.
Half the games that display that difficulty rating for their classes always have the mages as somewhere between intermediate and expert, mostly because they're squishy on the defense end, but it's like "Meh, I'll start with that anyway." I mean, you gotta learn to avoid damage in those games anyway, might as well be a glass cannon to get used to that faster.
Without getting too much further down this line of thought with every other example I can think of, there's just something satisfying about spell spam.
