In which Nao Iwamoto is a bit weird about her characterisation of gay men, much less weird about intersexuality, makes some dick jokes, and gives me yet another naming issue to work my way around (not to mention calling a giant cenote "Green Hole", which is a terrible name, although apparently there's one in the US called "The Blue Hole"? I had hoped it was going to be something I could find an Aztec equivalent for or would be based on a real thing). Also, the mysterious cuisine known as tacos.

The fact that I still don't know if Harapeko is male or female for certain pre-occupies my thoughts whenever they appear in a panel, but I am comforted that the official French translation thinks all the knights are male - I know I could just read ahead given that the third story arc is Harapeko-centric (and I have flicked through those volumes already) but why spoil myself entirely?

So as I mention on one page here I really wish I'd re-translated the names, rather than keeping them consistent with the original scanlation of chapter 1. It's what the French and Spanish official translations have done (no idea what the Korean did?). They'd sound really dumb in English, though - if your principal characters are called things like "Insomniac", "Hungry", "Always Feels Cold", and then you give someone the nickname "Chilly"... I know the names sound weird in Japanese too but still. The French and Spanish editions have also gone literal - so Kemonotsukai is called Dompteur in French, which just means "animal tamer". While I think the Marronnier Kingdom should probably be French-coded overall given the name, I think I might have gone with Latin names for the knights, so something like the following:

Nemukunai - Insomnis
Hakuai - Caritas (not sure about this one, honestly, as I can't think of a word that captures both philanthropy and omnisexual like hakuai insinuates that isn't horrifically insulting in Latin)
Atsugariya - Calidus
Samugariya - Gelidus
Kemonotsukai - Bestiarius
Tsurugijimon - Bellicus
Harapeko - Famelicus (Famelica? AAARGH I HOPE I HAVEN'T BEEN MISGENDERING HARAPEKO)

I could then have called our least favourite visitor from the Land of Cold something like Frigidus, although I think I would have still struggled to preserve some of Iwamoto's dialogue with that (Atsugariya says that Hinyari really is hinyari - I wasn't about to name the poor creature Chilly to preserve that dialogue).

Thank you for explaining all this, I've been wondering about the names for a while! The themed names kind of remind me of the silly puns in Astérix. Sometimes it's just hard to find a translation that fits the original meaning and still sounds decent.
