For anyone wondering the gal's name is:
微笑
Normally this is a word that is read 'bijou' and means 'smile'.
Japan has multiple ways that a kanji can be read though.
Kunyomi is the Japanese pronunciation of a kanji, most often seen in use with verbs.
Onyomi is the original Chinese pronunciation of a kanji.
and
Nanori which are specialized pronunciations of kanji that are used in names.
For the kanji 微, it's kunyomi is "kasu(ka)", the onyomi is "bi", and the nanori is "mi".
For the kanji 笑, it's kunyomi is "wara(u)" or "e(mu)", the onyomi is "shou", and the nanori is "emi".
So we can see that 微笑 is normally read with the onyomi, the original Chinese readings, "bi" and "shou", with a vocalization for "shou" making it sound like "jou".
However it could be read with the kunyomi as "kasuwara" or "kasue".
Even with the nanori pronunciation "miemi".
However these aren't hard and fast rules, but they are what's considered "standard".
This has all broken down lately as there's been a trend in Japan to give your child a "unique" name.
Called "Kirakira Names" (Sparkling Names) by their proponents and "DQN Name" (Dumb-ass Name) by the detractors, they often use super uncommon kanji readings to create names that a normal person would never assume the reading of.
Japan limits people to personal names with kanji off the Jouyou Kanji list (the 2,136 characters that make up all kanji used in everyday life) and the Jinmeiyou kanji list (an additional 863 kanji that are only used for names).
So you get names like
誕生
Traditional Reading: Tanjou (It's literally the word for "birth")
DQN Name: Baasu (or "Birth")
満月
Traditional Reading: Mitsuki (Normally read as "Mangetsu" but when used as a name it gets to use the nanori reading.)
DQN Name: Fuurumu (Japan-ized reading of "Full Moon")
and my personal favorite:
弥有二
Traditional Reading: Miyuuji
DQN Name: Myuutsuu (Mewtwo)
So our MC girl had some good company when it came to cringe-y parent things...

But since when do you need "Flexible thinking" for math?!? Couldn't have made it so that he was really bad at literature or philosophy or some shit?
The MC is clearly socially awkward and likes things to be well defined and stay in their place, and he could actually be on the spectrum.
He's a highschooler, so it isn't asked of him to develop new mathematical concepts and theories, or study quantum crap, the math he has to learn is a well defined, orderly and a purely logical discipline, where innate ability don't mean shit. He should be great at it.
