This was really interesting. I think it was a happy ending after all, since the whole concept is that the boy is the vessel for the lady's magic. Filling a cup with tea doesn't destroy the cup, it changes what it is. Likewise the boy might not be human anymore, but he'll be a part of something greater. When the alternative is a life of slavery, being a part of the magical world seems better. I see the whole magic vessel thing as a metaphor for education and self improvement. Knowledge changes who you are, but it doesn't destroy you. It forges you into someone new, and hopefully someone better.

Yea assimilation. They become her and then when they are approaching their end they find a child whose been neglected and/or unloved and give them joy and happiness and take care of them better than anyone in their old lives ever had for about 10-20 year and then they give the child the choice of whether or not to become them. Cause it seems to be a love thing(like they actually love the child) and want them to want to become them rather than FORCE them to.

The fact the kid will one day become the lady feels weird, specially with it being a magical world where it basically can happen literally, but thought from a metaphorical point of view, she's just changing him from someone broken and almost devoid of self into someone raised to be her succesor. So basically she's giving him something to be, but trying to hide that part of why she does it is for her own benefit and that's what she feels guilty for? For not being able to give him freedom, even as much as she likes him? All that as part of the metaphor.

Also, I guess the old man tried to care for the kids as much as he could, even if he had to made them do stuff that could kill them? IDK that point seems kinda underdeveloped.
