No? I'd imagine the backlash would be worse. I agree to some extent that it has some amount of romance to it, but it's moreso exploitive, manipulative, and malicious.

She has him on a debt leash, one that he did not even agree to. Had it she not have the money from the relics, it could've been somewhat justified as "both of us need money, so let's work together." But no, she made enough and needs him to be her meat shield. And she knows he'd do it cause he's a good person.

Are you blinded by woman? Loren would've escaped alone from the cave back in ch.3, abandoning that priest bitch with the 3 stooges, if he'd known her trash manipulative personality.

What about deactivating the ruin and saving the world? Bruh... Loren is a mercenary, not a hero. He doesn't care about other people. He said it himself in this chapter that he would part ways with that bitch once he paid his "debt" with her.

Man... This manga is a waste of time. All that time building that bitch's character and then the writer just dropped a nuke. Probably the dumbest plot to stay true to the title, the strange adventure of a broke mercenary slave.

Also, I like the dynamic between these two characters. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the usual tripe.

So, this is one of the "forever destitute hero" stories the Japanese absolutely love and adore. How disappointing.

Let me guess, later Loren will save a whole town from total annihilation, but in the process his actions will result in a couple of houses being destroyed. He will be held financially responsible for the lost houses, but nobody will care about him saving the whole town.

I'm gonna be real whilst I don't think Lapis is a massive ass (she's KINDA an ass) for her actions I also just... don't think the characters in here act like people. The protagonist is a mercenary but he just kinda takes everything thrown his way; he had a LITTLE autonomy at the start of the series but that was only really shown through objecting to the dumbass kid leader. He doesn't argue with Lapis either and seems to just immediately come to trust her completely.

It might be because I just binged Witch and Mercenary, but reading another manga of similar premise but subpar quality really sucks. Maybe I would've liked this more if I hadn't read something better beforehand (I'm glazing ts, but go read that manga instead please it's great).

He figured out she had lied to him earlier when she said she only had 1 spell left. Which means he himself was also lying when he told her earlier that he couldn't think of a single time she'd lied to him.
