What the heck is wrong with this character? He was 6 years old when he discovered about the heir situation, the mark of honor, the lacking sword/magic skills but this guy decided to just train on his own until 9 years old to finally teach the brother he cares for? For 3 years after that display he didn't teach his father or his older brother how to use magic and fight properly? Seriously?

He is presented as someone that cares for his father and brother, but his actions don't make any sense.

@mizuki I think that was my theory when I first read this too. Coming back to this now though I forget what really happens after this or how much further I even read because it's been a while, and I've crammed a lot of other series in my head since then. Details do tend to get muddled a bit after time like that.

@Wilhelm_Stenvall - Matty had normal level of concern for his family's village. So when he found a good (and easy) way to ensure it would not be run into the ground by Bifgel, he did it. I suspect it's mostly because he disliked Bifgel.

@wolfeng - it was only at 9 years old that Matty learned that Biffgel was the heir, and that magic ability mattered for that.
Since Lake hasn't demonstrated interest in magic, Matty didn't bother teaching him. Matty isn't a busybody who would help others left and right, he is a battle maniac who mostly cares about getting stronger and recruiting potential comrades for his party.

@ flannan That actually doesn't make it any better. Your statement means he took an entire 3 years before finding out who the heir was. You can argue that he's not interested in that, but you gotta say that's an important bit of information when he's part of the family. Really makes you wonder how he can still maintain a proper relationship with his family members when he seems to know next to nothing about them.

Easy answer: control. If over generations you make the populace think that all magic has to use chants whereas some group continues to exploit the knowledge of chantless magic casting, you still have a population that can use magic, but one where you still have a remarkable advantage. It's more commonly used with technology in science fiction (e.g. Stargate, where the government has tech millennia ahead of the non-classified stuff but lets the populace at large think the latest cutting edge tech is the best there is), but the same concept applies here.
