IKR, especially when you consider that esp. if they're like a 5 year old princess with an 18 year old body - they could marry her off no probs (or even worse) etc... (same thing with the boys of the family too, but being a little girl puts it a little more obviously)

Rereading this, the second prince is probably either the most villainous or the most heroic character, having gone out of his way to find his half-siblings (before and after their mother's death) and giving them the straight story abut what their life will be like.
I want to believe he's a good person, because holy shit do these two need someone who has a modicum of understanding of what their circumstances are.
Also, I would love for empathic magic to be thing in this world, so that each member of the imperial family experiences at least a little bit of the abuse these children suffered due to the emperor's neglect!

There is....so much to unpack.
We skipped through the twins' trauma. He did try to build trust and in some way did help them so that's fine. He wasn't interested in them before. So looking for them was just for fun. Bringing them into the Palace (I assume he was partly behind this) probably for fun too. I can't help but think this is some scheme of his.

I'd want the twins to change hair colour and leave royalty. Though this would take some time, I think they're better off being commoners than having to deal with all this crap.

For one, the brother and sister are completely platonic and I didn't see a romance tag anywhere.
