This was such a good series that got tainted in the end. Idk if the author was salty or not, but it indeed looks like an axe. Imho, this was the point the plot started to get shitty:
You see, in this kind of coming-of-age stories in manga/anime/LN something is usually very important: The role model or or adult figure that leads the young mc through his growing process,
In Oregairu, for example, 2 adult figures basically were the ones leading the plot with their comments about mc decisions.
If you introduce sensei as a way to lead kobayakawa and u just scrap her out of the plot with no reason then this happens. felt underwhelming how she left and it seems the author didnt know what to do from that point. Nobody was really there for kobayakawa to consult, or encourage him. he was alone. his peers arent good ppl for him to consult as he doesnt admire or respect as sensei.

The ending fucking sucks, it’s almost as bad as domestic girlfriend and I didn’t even think that was possible.

Copied this from one of my other posts.

I haven't seen the ending myself, but from what I've read so far I can't understand the overwhelming criticism of it. Everyone likes to have the feel good vibes at the end, but I don't think this ending is necessarily a mistake just because people don't like it. I might actually like it better than the generic romance ending, since realistically this is what you'd expect to happen to someone who refuses to accept the support of others. At least for me, having an asshole protagonist is more interesting than the Gary Sue that's typical in this type of genre. Sure, the buildup with the mc gaining all these new friends is kinda wasted, but from the outset I think that the author had this in mind; it's more of a reflection on a poor execution if that is the case.

From what I've read so far, I wasn't really emotionally invested in it since I thought that it was a bit shallow, but I found it to be more enjoyable than I thought it would. Reading the ending probably won't change my opinion of it much, since from the backlash I'm seeing I was expecting something more on the level of usagi drop. Although I can't say that I'm not biased, since I always hated the mc the most and kinda hoped that he would get a bad ending, since it always seems like the side characters get the short end of the stick.

@lightingcloud your mileage may vary, but with Gotoubun (under spoiler are my reaction to the endings, no details of the plot are mentioned)
I was merely disappointed by the ending, with this one once I read spoilers for the last chapter I immediately dropped the series. Granted I always liked Gotoubun much more than Hoshino, so this could also be a factor.

@jayrus29 the way that it’s phrased in reddit is a bit biased buts it’s pretty decent.

The way that you will see it talked about is that the main character breaks up with the main girl and cuts relationships with everybody then goes back to being a lonely loser. This isn’t exactly true though. Leading up to the end, the main character realizes that he has not actually grown as a person at all and he thinks that he is far too dependent on Hoshino. If you have seen oregairu, think of the whole “codependence” thing from that. They break up and get separated as they aren’t in the same class anymore. There’s a goodbye scene where he kisses her on her forehead (might’ve been on the eye or something). Main character eventually makes friends by approaching somebody for the first time (all his friends approached him first originally or he was dragged into doing it). He makes friends with a guy in his class who actually has been in his classes for multiple years and then the manga ends with him looking up after doing this. Could he have worked on himself without pushing everybody away? Probably. Then the epilogue happens, both of them are adults and they are seemingly dating.

tldr; main character realizes that he is a loser who depends too much on those around him and gets away from them to work on himself. time skip happens and he’s together with hoshino again.

So yea, most of the reviews you will see from the time are from readers who were mad about how their relationship turns out pre epilogue. The epilogue also did come out a bit after the final chapter so many people thought that it ended just like that.

I liked the series up until I heard the spoiler
that the series was getting ganked and in an angry twist the author decides to split the main couple
.

After seeing that the translation work is getting revived I decided to swing into the comments to see if the feeling had remained the same.
Pleasantly surprised to see from some users that there was a delayed epilouge that came out and righting the 'wrong'.
Briefly checked it out. They apparently get back together at a later date based on implications.

Would have worked better if it had been done during publication and had ample time to build up, jusitify, and resolve prior to a short epilouge.
