i assumed she liked messing with him on purpose, like a less harsh version of the "i asked my first girlfriend why she went out with me"

It's not a twist, it's been clear since the first chapter. They straight up get along. They have similar tastes, liking the same niche books and movies. They gel really well in conversations, time flying by when they talk. She finds him cute, liking how she makes him flustered because of how clearly he finds her attractive, but how he's careful to try and not overstep boundaries.

It only looks unusual because the guy just refuses to believe that this person who reached out to him over a book they both read and then wanted to meet him after talking about things they both liked for months and then has kept trying to meet him and telling him that she enjoys being around him actually likes him. If it wasn't for the enormous amount of self-deprecation his internal monologue has and the fact that he's the only one we hear the thoughts of, this'd be a fuckin' fluffy romance where a trendy girl with a secret nerdy side finds a cute guy and brings him out of his shell.
