Wow, this really got axed, huh. It's a real shame because she felt super interesting up until, like, the last two chapters; and there was a lot of really cool characterization ground to cover. What kind of person was she? Was her confidence genuine or fake? WHAT DOES SHE EVEN DO? The male lead says that he doesn't actually know anything about her and he wants to because he's enthralled by her, but WE sure as shit don't get to learn it!
This weird, sudden shift in motivation and expression is annoying, too. There's so many shots of her showing real affection in her expressions, and she was teasingly supportive throughout. The manga shows them getting along, but then focuses on the moments of self-doubt and anxiety that the male lead has and uses that to generate tension, uncertainty, and drama. The core conflict here was internal; she was constantly saying verbally that she wanted to hang out with him and non-verbally that she liked the guy and wanted to be around him more, but he never really believed it. Now she drops the "I wanted to see what face you'd make if I didn't show" line, and nothing comes of it? That's not the way she was the whole manga. She's deliberately confusing here, when up until these two chapters the confusion came from the male lead's inability to take her forward actions as actually meaning the things they appear to mean.
This feels like webcomic/first draft Azusa; a less interesting character that is openly manipulative when she wasn't up until like... now. The core idea there, that he's like "I'm not worthy of you yet, but I love you, I'll become a man that deserves you" and she basically goes "okay, well I guess we're dating" is solid, but poorly expressed. There's something here, but not fleshed out enough. You can read her statement even as a bit of a proposal. "You have until I get engaged, and when that happens, will you treasure me forever" feels like she could be saying that she's asking if he'd basically spend his life with her.
There's even a time skip, where it shows that he is doing okay and he is basically dating Asusa, and she says "I can't wait forever, hold on to me." Is that a proposal too? It feels like it. But it's confusing. It's a backtrack away from the manga up until this point, where she was honestly pretty dang clear about what she wanted, but not an actual twist. Cause she's still, like... around. She wasn't manipulating him into doing something bad. She was actually the best dang thing that happened to him so far at the end of the manga; he's pursuing his dream with confidence and finding success, as well as having Asusa by his side and helping Ametella find her own way as an illustrator. They're friends with a good professional relationship. Asusa teases him about it, but clearly isn't actually jealous(3p?). She didn't mess with his emotions, she clarified them and gave him a path forward, while not asking him to give up another meaningful relationship.
Cause there always was the potential for a twist. That always was possible; we didn't know much about her and we were instead just inferring things from her actions and expressions. Last chapter felt like it could've been setup for it; the character growth he needed to get the Good Ending was there, he was able to understand his inner conflict and resolved to change it, but what if she actually was playing with him this whole time? What if she just wanted to fuck him cause he was a virgin, and any sort of attachment she seemed to show was manipulation? What if this was just a big old game? It could've been a fascinating bomb to drop.
But instead we get sort of a... non ending. It doesn't actually commit. Azusa's actions can't be reasonably interpreted as consistent throughout(cause of these last two chapters), nor as deliberately inconsistent and manipulative. She didn't get what she wanted and left, nor was she teasing him to get him out of his shell, nor is she like actually nuts and unable to show normal affection and have a normal relationship; cause we've seen them get along normally the whole manga, it just fast forwards through those parts. It's unsatisfying in the worst way, a story that pulled you along because you were trying to understand one of the main characters who you don't have the point of view of, understood this and made it the goal of the other main character, then just never resolves that. She doesn't leave him wanting, either; she's at his house, is in his novels, and sits on his lap and tells him to hold on to her. We just don't get to see him do that even though we see him RESOLVE TO
All told, a bummer. I think the story could've gone in a lot of cool directions, and this one could've been a very satisfying one with a conclusion that could've helped combat a lot of nasty framing that new, terrible dudes are doing in this new, terrible internet. Asusa is confident, a bit of a tease, clearly has had sex before, and isn't interested in trying to soothe and placate the male lead's ego; instead sidestepping his desperate fishing for complements and his flailing self-deprecation and instead communicating non-verbally that she likes him, and teasing him verbally. She's a sexy, flirty dream girl; she seemed too good to be true back when this was first written. But now people call her a gaslighting thot. The male lead's actions of understanding that self-flagellation is self-serving and that what he should do is be emotionally open and clear, that he was making excuses and pushing Asusa away when all she was trying to do was break the walls he kept building is honestly perfect character development. It's exactly the sort of thing people should be doing.
But we don't get the reward of a better understanding of Asusa or a more affectionate and open Asusa or even an emotionally moved Asusa, we get a confusing Asusa. Not in a bomb drop way, either; not having us go "oh my god she was just playing with him the whole time" or having her leave him behind or... anything. Instead we just get nothing.
It's a classic underwritten ending. I hope Okaeri Papa is doing well, cause that manga is heading into fascinating territorry and has been really well done so far. Having it be axed and getting a conclusion to that thing as unsatisfying as this one will be... depressing.
