One of the best series the harem genre has to offer.
The story can be divided into three parts. The first lasts until around chapter 120 and has Katsuragi "conquering" various girls whose insecurities have allowed demons to take hold within them. This was lighthearted fun, but nothing extraordinary, some change was needed.
The second part lasts until around chapter 190 and has Katsuragi focusing on six (seven including Chiriro) girls in particular to bring out the goddesses within them so they can defeat a conspiracy from rogue elements of New Hell. The pace became much faster and I read through in two days (had I not throttled my reading I would've finished in one). My big problem was the premise, Katsuragi went from a loner gamer boy to a destined hero saving the world, this shift in his role didn't sit right with me. Within that context however the arc was a great thriller that skillfully minimized fight scenes which were unrelated to the main story, such as having the actual fight with the conspirators in chapter 180 or so lasting only a few pages. In my eyes this is when the author decided on a Chiriro ending. She was one of only two characters who liked him for what he was rather than the front he put up in conquests. And, she was unpredictable during her conquests, which is what Katsuragi was looking for. This made her stand out from the thousands of games he had played.
The third arc, going until chapter 266, was the weakest part. It developed Tenri too much for a character destined to lose. Over thirty chapters were dedicated to a silly points game that had none of the characters developed beforehand. That one porno mag scene was very uncomfortable to read, I see no reason why it had to be added. From chapter 230 onwards it got better by adding the main characters back into the story and having the thriller elements that made the previous arc great. This arc unintentionally extended the story without breaking the plot developed before. By having seventy chapters with no development between Katsuragi and the other characters it becomes believable he would still like Chiriro when he came back. Of course, excluding Tenri, which honestly did not need to happen.
Last theres the two ending chapters. I enjoyed how they handled the confession and later planned date. Elsie finally finding a loving family was heat to see. Having read horror stories I thought Elsie would've been Katsuragi's choice, since this is a trope usually found in harem fantasy like this story. Very glad she was given something better. I'm conflicted on whether Tenri should have had the last dialogue. Immediately I thought her panels should have come before Chiriro asks to go for tea with Katsuragi, but after writing this I'm not sure. She had an outsized influence on the story. When Katsuragi wanted to reset the world again late into the final arc, she convinced him to not. She also held the instructions for what to do when the events of the story would take place ten years afterwards. She became almost a grey eminence when working with her goddess to make sure thing went right. From this perspective she deserved to be in the final panels as recognition of the vast power she held by the end of the story compared to Katsuragi.
The art is fantastic. Usually I don't comment on artwork but in this case it was great. The characters were adorable, especially chibi Elsie. No doubt the art raises my rating of this series.
Having read about 65 harem stories at this point this was easily one of the best. Great characters, great art, fantastic arcs barring the last, and even then the second part of that arc was great. In particular the satisfying non-harem ending was bliss in a genre devoid of such endings. The biggest shame is the lack of English paperback as this belongs on any manga shelf.
9/10 (with some reluctance).
