It was explained in the beginning chapters when she went out to her funeral. She was escorted out by her first fiance who then brought Cain with him as a "friend". She hated Cain because he used to be under her as a Holy Knight but he then left them and turned to their rival counterpart which is the Royal Knights (it seemed he also got into a fight with another Holy Knight that made the other quit iirc). So she kinda sees him as a traitor. Also, when she got assaulted by her ex-fiance, he was on the first floor standing as guard (though he probably had no idea what's happening). She then got accused of murder by her stepmom saying there was a witness (indirectly hinting it's Cain when she asked as he's the only one there). There's also the assumption back then that he killed the ex-fiance after finding him and found out he's no longer useful as there was no one else at the scene of crime but her and him. Well, he didn't stand as witness as ML took his place (now we know it's because he's a spy), but he never really left a good impression after meeting again.

That does kind of make it sound like the author is trying to make us forgive him by making him behave cutely.

Which wont work. He could easily assume that she was going to be assaulted, raped, you name it in there considering the fiance temperance at the time.

And considering the backstory, unless the Holy Knight (he caused to quit) was horribly corrupt or a devil worshipper, my impression of him are still at the bottom of the ladder.

Haha, yeah. For the fight incident with another Holy Knight, it's kinda worse because she said he framed someone up that made him quit, but I don't know if I remember it correctly so I didn't add it. The point was that she have every reason and right to hate him. Though it wasn't shown what happened, only her musings, so I have to give him the benefit of the doubt and not conclude.

As for the assault of the ex, I think he knows they are there to get "rid" off her. I just don't know if it necessarily included r*pe or he knows that's included. At that time, she was under suspicion of being a sacrifice and she's the daughter of a suspect who's planning to get rid of the one they are serving. Take note, sacrifices get the protection of the demon king as they had stated when they explained why Clause(?) attacked her and how they concluded she's not one when she used Holy Powers. So I wonder if the initial plan was to use the ex to see if she really is a sacrifice (with ML on standby to confirm). But she escaped, so they have to use cruder methods such as directly attacking her to test her out. I'm not sure if it's this particular incident he's apologizing for though or something else since he didn't directly state it. He just said he judged her wrongly.

I just like it when authors write their story so it makes sense in hindsight. It makes rereading worth it.

"Trash of the Count's Family" is an amazing web novel when it comes to that kind of stuff, with so many things making increasingly more sense in hindsight it is amazing how much forethought the writer puts into that story.

It isn't romance or action per say, but it is an amazing high quality read if you want good humour, smart writing (in the plot sense, not in the wall of technical text), lovable characters and so on. Also, plenty of adorable fluff.

Also, can't brush off the fact that MC was endangered in the beginning and Cain DID NOT help out. He looked like a bad guy, acted like it and now he's acting cute? Nope! Not gonna let it pass. I need a good redemption arc for him before I let my guard down. Saving the maid was not enough tbh. He needs to save a few more lives. lol

@Sumatose Check out chapter 5. The Holy knights and Imperial Knights have a HUGE rivalry. He used to be a holy knight who served under her leadership, but he left and joined the Third Knight Brigade of the Imperial Knights. So she has a huge grudge against him. ALSO, Chapter 7, he was the "friend" of her evil faux-fiance. He was there when the evil fiance wanted to assault her at some tavern. And when she fled after beating up her fiance, he turned up dead. So Cain showed up to her house to arrest her for murder. And they threw her in jail....
so yeah, his track record sucks. He was undercover, but still its like... who is this cute, shy, bastard?
