BLM stands for Black Lives Matter, an american protest movement against police brutality. George Floyd, a black man, had the cops called on him out of suspicion he was passing a counterfeit bill. 4 cops came and one of them kneeled on his neck for 9 minutes(a solid 2 after he was unconscious) while the other 3 basically watched. Floyd said many times that he could not breathe, was in clear distress, and called out for his mother at one point. This was videotaped from multiple angles and bystanders were pleading with the police to get off his neck, but they didn't budge.
George died. This immediately ignited protests all over the country, from Minneapolis, the city where Floyd lived, to Seattle and NYC and almost every city in the country. While the cop that knelt on Floyd's neck has been arrested and charged, it took days of protest and the other 3 have no cases pending against them.
Cities all over America are embroiled in protest and police action, and if you know anything about american police, well, you know that's... trouble. See:
https://streamable.com/u2jzoo. No one is happy with the rioting and looting that has been occurring, but the heavy handed police response is scary and the entire reason these protests are happening is because someone was murdered in the street by a cop.
It's a very big moment in america, as we've been hit hard by covid and have nearly 30% unemployment so people are very upset to start with. No one knows where all this will go, but I hope that it will eventually lead to a more responsible and accountable police force. Protests like this have happened in the past and in other countries, and sometimes they've led to positive things. It can be hard to see that future now, but its still a possibility.
