A theory I have is that the heroine's been cursed by a demon king to only remember the lives that the hero didn't return to her. Given the time it takes for the cycle to happen (roughly 100 years or so I'm guessing) and the mass devastation that happens with each Demon invasion and each rise of the Demon King it wouldn't be hard to fudge recorded history to make it seem like there's been less cycles than there has been.

Maybe her soul is a sort of a catalyst used by the Goddess to nurture the hero by proximity and a demon king is trying to taint it by damaging the heart of the reincarnation... or perhaps she wasn't meant to remember past lives at all by the Goddess? Perhaps her memories have been tempered with by a demon lord to only remember the worst of her past lives with aim towards trying to sever the thread of fate tying her soul to that of the Hero?
