This plot hook is a really annoying fallacy I've seen come up in a few manga. Legally speaking, it's really uncommon to inherit someone's debt. Since she was likely a dependent of her parents, that debt would be taken from her inheritance (of which there's none, too bad for the people her dad owed) but can't be forced onto her.

I hate bullshit plot devices and lazy storytelling.

I hope they at least have thought of something funny for it having a negative length. Lets see it is at 96.6k likes.
