As someone who read Highschool DxD (the Light Novel) for the actual plot of the supernatural world having to deal with a catastrophe threatening multiple pantheons and mythologies simultaneously, if not the world itself, forcing them to work together and learn ways to coexist...you can actually do that, if the author actually cares about anything besides the ecchi/porn.
