People need to understand that stories like these often add extra side characters just to move the plot along. Without these characters, the story might just end when the main couple gets together. These extra characters help keep the story interesting for longer or keyword "drag" as much they can. It does sadly frustrates the readers to the max!

This is one reason why many manga have had so many unimportant "side" characters and filler content and older days beta —to keep the story going. Teen high school romance stories might not last long if everything goes perfectly. Or they just use comedy to keep things entertaining forgetting initial narrative as that goal has already been reached.

From a writer's and business perspective, it makes sense to stretch the story. However, just like romcoms in Hollywood have declined over the years, this genre shouldn't be overused in manga either. But since these works are mainly aimed at Japanese readers, it's hard to say what their exact preferences are as they produces so many of these type of novel, film, anime and manga.
Talking about these story it's only difference is the use of 2 language as the "story mechanism" and i agree this is overrated. Talking about art, most of the mainstream publication has good digital arts nowadays so that advantage has gone too.

the thing is, side characters to support the main story is absolutely essential to creating a good story. everyone knows that. however, there are so many ways to fuck it up, thus ruining the good story.

one of them, is what the author is doing in this manga. unnecessary, and two dimensional side characters who exist solely to move the plot along is not a good way to tell the story, but if you add incest, sexual harassment, abuse, general fan service, and harem that you try to make sure you constantly deny that it isn't, you can bet your ass that it's 100% going to be adapted, and considered an a-tier anime or manga. you don't have to actually put much thought into the plot if the audience you cater to are mostly degenerates. and it succeeds because that's apparently half of the people who read or watch anime and manga.

but it's not like we should care right? after all, no one really watches hentai for the plot. if this is what the product caters to, then it will attract people that has these preferences. honestly, im about to drop this series solely for the fact that it made me wait a whole month for two chapters to finish one conversation in the manga. the pacing in this is so abysmal.

masha is barely written, so there's still a chance the author could somehow fuck up her character. but yeah, with how little she's been developed, she's somehow more well written than the rest. no wonder people root for her than the person in the fucking title lmao

i read this after watching the anime thinking it would be ahead of it, but somehow its actually behind it by a good amount.

imo this looks like a all style no substance type of series, the anime had some really nice art and it got a small chuckle outta me sometimes, but that was all it had to its name, does anyone know if the ln gets better or is it just more of the same

i stopped reading the ln by volume 6, since i found more fun just reading the manga despite how slow it is. and as i read through the light novel, it was leading into some sort of... psychological warfare, type shit??? i dont fucking know, but it certainly wasn't enticing enough for me to keep reading, so take that as you will (alya's character was getting worse tho, masachika's the same even after 6 volumes, side characters are still side characters, pretty boring).

the anime is ahead because it's adapting the light novel, which is more far ahead than both. since the anime is getting a second season, and this manga is on a biweekly release (so it finishes one conversation in the series per month), id suggest you keep watching if u wanna keep seeing the same shit or go ahead and read the light novel, which released the 9th volume recently.

The only reason this... thing... is popular is because of waifu bait but then even the waifus are all shallow characters. I was expecting a group of highschoolers in this forum hyping this manga as I'm going through the entire thread and boy picture my surprise when I found a lot of readers who share the same sentiments as me.

Observe as the MC will do everything in his power to prevent the plot from advancing whatsoever.

How do the most milquetoast manga have 9s in this website, I will never know.

I remember dropping this 2 years ago when they pulled the bullshit "MC is actually a perfect guy" and puts on rizz infront of dudes approaching the russian girl (thats all her character is), sweeps her from the situation to perfectly dance like the perfect Gary Stu he is. And next chapter, NO romantic progress. What the fuck.

Now people are creaming their pants over the anime? Anime fans really only care about animation

I began reading Tokidoki Bosotto Roshia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san hoping for an enjoyable romantic-comedy story, but unfortunately, the experience quickly became uncomfortable and made me feel harassed by the dynamics portrayed.

The central relationship between Alya and the male protagonist, which is supposed to be based on teasing and secret feelings, felt manipulative and unsettling. Alya's "tsundere" personality—where she constantly hides her true feelings and often says one thing while meaning another—created an emotional push-and-pull that felt more like psychological harassment than innocent affection. The way she switches between coldness and warmth felt forced and emotionally exhausting, as if the reader is meant to enjoy the male character being toyed with, but it ends up crossing boundaries of what feels acceptable.

The repetitive nature of the teasing scenes became uncomfortable to read. Instead of building tension or charm, it felt like Alya's actions were invasive, and there were moments where her behavior seemed controlling, even though it's portrayed as humor. The lack of communication and the one-sided teasing only made the dynamic feel toxic, leaving me with an unpleasant feeling rather than enjoyment.

As a reader, I often felt frustrated and even harassed by the way the story continued to portray this unhealthy relationship dynamic. I understand that some stories use teasing as a form of romantic development, but this manga takes it too far, making it hard to connect with the characters or root for their relationship. The emotional whiplash felt manipulative and tiring, and it became difficult to engage with the plot in a positive way.

Overall, Tokidoki Bosotto Roshia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san left me feeling uncomfortable and emotionally drained. If you're sensitive to toxic dynamics or manipulative relationship portrayals, I would not recommend this manga. What could have been a lighthearted romantic comedy instead felt like an unpleasant experience that crosses emotional boundaries.

But that's just my opinion!!!

So I've had a discussion with a few fans who take this crap seriously about their standards for a good romcom and why they claim this show is apparently better than older romcoms and then I gave my personal and a general opinion about it. SPOILER ALERT, they were NOT happy. You know how they try to invalidate criticism? "wElL iT wAS betTeR iN thE LN" "dUDe tHe LN wAS a mASterpIEcE" They're treating me like I've never fucking read the LN to know if they were bullshitting or not because I have and the LN is literally a fanservice shithole. Ask any LN readers if the source material is comparatively better with the illustrations of the cute girls and the morally dubious interactions between the MC and his sister. Fans who tell you to read the LN are usually those who doesn't read LNs and thinks being a LN reader somehow puts them on a higher pedestal. That or they've never read a good fucking book in their life. There was also that one clueless idiot who claimed that the incest sister is a deep character in the LN. I was wondering how deep in his ass was he was talking when he said that because even her backstory doesn't explain how she turned out to be who she is later on, aside from being Japanese enough to fit in the trope of classic sister loves her brother
