Some Ryokan will have one or more "family" baths you can reserve. It's not unusual for couples to reserve them.

Actual shared mixed-gender baths with other guests are exceedingly rare that they could probably be called extinct now.

I haven't checked the raws, but I wouldn't be too surprised if he MC was expecting one of those family baths and the translator either made a mistake or simplified it to keep it easy to understand.
