I see some version of this in a lot of manga. So much so I think it might be something that actually happens as a way to sound polite or humble. I would love for a character to respond to that with, "Nope, I don't want you to come after all."

the only thing i can think of is if he's converting a complex number from polar coordinates to cartesian ones, in which case multiplying what i assume to be r and the cos together should give him Re, not Im.
