Nah, this is an example of the bizarre Japanese fixation on youth. It'd make more sense if they called him "uncle" (oji san). It's just an overused trope in anime and manga for anyone over the age of 25 to be called "old"

That seems to be a thing with youth here in the west too, I was called old by a co-worker when I was 26 and she was 16 or 17.
