I am guessing this is the test Inari sama was talking about, also I think Kogane went a little overboard understandable but turning him in would have been the better option especially since the whole cursing thing without permission seems to be a big no no and it seems like he was having second thoughts on his actions and preparing to give up, but what's done is done I'm curious what severing Karma entails.

Also, did Kogane get permission to scare Goro's previous chief; I wonder if there are rules for exposing yourself like that as well.
Iirc she did get permission for it since it was well deserved and for good reason, not just petty revenge.

I don't remember if it was ever mentioned if she had permission to scare him or not. But in chapter 82, Akane says that even with the permission, she would still receive a backlash for using dark magic. So that is the main issue.

Something I'd like to say in conjunction with this is that, if I remember right, the more Kogane uses dark magics, the more she could get carried away and be a "monster." (at least that's what I think, infer, and remember)
But, I wholly doubt that Zanma is that much of a jerk to make her a monster, so when the next big bad evil guy comes around, she'd have more control and not be so irrational when it comes to survival and Goro.

No comment on what Kogane did since we don't have enough info.

I do think the little speech about human greed is uh... not very well reasoned, given the greed we've seen from non-humans in this manga and also what I've seen real animals do. I have a family member who adopted a cat who was literally starving to death... then found out another family was putting lots of food out for the cat, but the cat's own sister would bully her and eat all the food every time, and she was big and healthy from eating all the food meant for two cats. What is this if not betrayal for greed?

Sorry for depressing anecdote. I just have very little patience for the humans are the real monsters, nature is a noble savage, and similar memes. We already know what it looks like when an animal evolves to a higher state of existence and gets sapience and some kind of morality. It's us. Our forebears were apes. A fox would not be better.

edit: Unrelated, but imagine the lack of foresight it takes to be a malicious plant creature and have no plan for dealing with getting set on fire. At least do stop-drop-and-roll, and have ya boy toss some dirt on.

She didn't say anything about youkais or animals being morally superior, though. She meant that human greed and supernatural beings are a bad combination. Supernatural beings don't operate in human terms, they do whatever suits them. If they are helping a human that doesn't mind being a little bit evil to achieve their goals, it's a recipe for disaster.

I am guessing (I have not actually translated the next chapter in detail, though I've skimmed it) that she severed his karma or something like that so he's a soulless husk since he's somehow still technically alive like the cockroach he is. We'll find out next chapter!
I'm assuming that the author is drawing from Japanese culture here like everything else to this point, which would suggest a Shinto framework.

Spent an hour or so trying to make sense of the Shinto concept that would correspond to the Western 'soul', and boy is that not an exact parallel. As far as I can figure, there are four parts that make the 'soul' up, each with a somewhat different role, so it may be that she removed/consumed one of those while allowing the remainder to stay, and Glasses is therefore incomplete and in some sense 'dead' while still being functional and conscious (and, given his being out of whack to begin with, entirely unaware of what happened to him).

If anyone has a better grasp on this, I'd be interested to hear a more informed opinion on whether this makes sense - I'm not going to pretend a bit of web browsing gets me any sort of understanding.

Karma has come to collect its debt, R.I.P. Glasses, the rest of your life is fucked and fucking over. I hope Kogane is okay, despite the backlash she may face from the curse. Hopefully our boy Goro steps up..with a ring? Hell, after everything best waifu has done for you, you better step up. All in all so far, everything is..

Cursing the guy without permission may have landed Kogane into a whole lot of trouble, and she probably knows it hence her running away at the end.

Here's hoping Goro can help her out of any punishment.
