@Mogima - I disagree. Alfonso was an oathbreaker. By the standards of the time, for him to violate the bonds of Holy Matrimony and the treaty between Spain and Portugal, Maria had the right to demand death for him AND his mistress. Even if you're arguing Leonara would have killed Maria for striking Alfonso down, she had even MORE right to take down an unjust, unChristian adulterer and his mistress.
Granted, if she hadn't built up the necessary political capital to assert her right at the time, then she couldn't avoid exile - but currently, she's doing the right thing by executing the lawless adulteress in public, when Ottoman-style assassination-by-silken-bowstring would have suited her ends better. The only hiccup would be the assassination of the bride Leonara arranged.
Granted, if she hadn't built up the necessary political capital to assert her right at the time, then she couldn't avoid exile - but currently, she's doing the right thing by executing the lawless adulteress in public, when Ottoman-style assassination-by-silken-bowstring would have suited her ends better. @sylvacoer dude.not leonora. the other nobles. with a short temper like maria, she won't last long in a court life. she'll make too many enemies. the one who protected her is her father's influence when she's young, and pedro when she's old.
and while the mass only know to follow the law and to be a devout believer, you and i know that in the court, none of that matters. if you're weak, you dead.
and how is leonor a lawless adulteress? no passage in the bible ever forbids poligamy actually.
three passages in the pastoral epistles (1Timothy 3:2, 1Timothy 3:12 and Titus 1:6) state that church leaders should be the "husband of one wife." This has been read by some Christian sects as a prohibition of polygamy. but no other passage have the prohobition of poligamy. and this is funny because now, the church leader in catholic can't even marry. 😄
leonor is also a better stateswoman who actively helped the kingdom whle maria is jut 'i'm da queen. obey me' kind of girl. the public knows that. heck, alfonso has appointed her the royal mistress.
i do agree that alfonso's thinking was also affected by his D, but then maria's target is wrong. should have tried to kill alfonso. the reason she targeted leonor imo, is because she don't want to lose her power.
