lol with all of the insane, wacky, eldritch horror things our lil crew has encountered, it's no wonder some lil oni horns didn't phase them 😂 I wonder how it'd turn out if Zen showed his horns as well, but I also like that he didn't

Thank you for scanlating!!

A Jikimiya (直宮) is a direct-line imperial prince. Is that really his name or his title? I think this is Crown Prince Otomo (future Emperor Kobun).

The illustration for kidou is a white heart, and here we have a sword powered by three black hearts that split a fourth white one. What does it all mean

Does anyone know if the sword described in the last page is an actual mythological object? Or is it an invention of the author?

If we apply the multiverse logic to this... I can totally see a timeline where Ozuno far in his path as a sennin, grieving Koto's situation or even death becomes disillusioned with humanity and starts on a path of pure unnempathy.

But if we look at how he has to "deform" himself periodically and keeps his memories externally stored, we see that such a path has taken a toll on his mind, his naturally caring personality did mesh well with his decision... but obsession is a strong "bond"... when it settles in it is hard to unmake, put supernatural elements in the mix... we saw how he looks when he is "deformed", it isn't a pretty sight.

I can see why Jikimya doesn't like his nickname, if I caught his situation right... he is the young son of the previous and unpopular emperor, his father's policies angered a lot of powerful people, the "loyalists" who backed him up probably just want to make him into a puppet ruler or just don't like Azuma-no-miya.

So when you factor all these things, despite the nickname having a very cool and dignified meaning... it is probably said in irony, as he himself has no real power, his supporters just want to use him in contrast to his uncle's supporters that help him because of his charisma.

Not that there aren't people wanting to use Azuma, there clearly are, but he has the mind and presence to keep them under control even if he fears the outcome of such war.

I think the oni are priests. The record stated that kidou is the foundation on which the kami are built. As we know from the stimulation game, the kami use worship as the source of their strength. So we can say that kidou is mantra in the form of reverence.
It's different from the other three hearts by both its colour (white instead of black) and size ( way bigger). The size is pretty easy to understand, worship increases with number, but the colour part is tricky. Kidou is white because like sennin, the oni becomes detatched from humans?
Chapter two mentions two definitions for oni: one is those who wouldn't be considered to be living properly and the other is man-eaters. Kidou is also said to be the art of achieving prosperity through the selfish act of harvesting people. So we can consider kidou to be living by extracting resources from other people instead of living properly and making stuff yourself.
The description of the three heart sword and koto-sama's story shows that the oni are necessary for bringing the kami to earth in the first place and that the oni's mantra are unusual.
With all of these in mind, my theory is the oni are proto-priests. Their mantras are unusual because unlike normal people who live properly and make a living for themselves, these people spend time writing story, fiction, illusions,... And through the stories of the priests the kami came to life. Priests, like the kami, are revered and given offering. So the source of their power is the same as the kami, they gain resources from other people, through the use of fiction, mantra and become powerful

Prince Otomo is a real historical figure attested independently through the writings of his famous great-grandson Oumi no Mifune . The historical question about him was whether or not he actually ever ascended to the imperial throne (as Emperor Kobun) because between the North-South split of the imperial court and the Meiji era the official imperial succession list skipped him. However, today his status as emperor, even with such a short reign, is accepted by the imperial court itself.
