@Crabby The translator said they will only work with the volume scans.

It hurts to wait but the quality makes it worth it.
Do you know how we can contact him? I don't want to offend him, but perhaps we can encourage him to keep up his hard work. Setting up a donation link, similar to what other translators have done, could be a source of motivation for him

First, I want to second everyone who's posted so far. Y'all are right. This really is something special. I was hooked immediately, and by the time I caught up with the scanlations, it had become one of my all-time favorite series.

Review:

Though set in a 6th century version of "the time of legends" (as Terry Gilliam called the fantastical otherwhen) and based on quasi-historical Japanese folktales, Touge Oni feels fresh and surprising at every turn. Mangaka Tsurubuchi Kenji incorporates elements from various genres, sometimes reaching far beyond the boundaries of traditional fantasy adventure. Nevertheless, it all somehow feels of a piece and consistent with the setting, even chatty fourth wall breaks, appeals to Google, and a sci-fi side story involving an errant black hole.

Wild ideas come fast and furious, and the narrative jumps around in time with a large cast of characters, some of whom strongly resemble one another, others whose appearances can change drastically from one moment to the next. As a result, the plot isn't always easy to follow. You may want to take notes, especially on the names. While I wish I'd started doing so at the beginning, I wound up enjoying even the moments of page-flipping confusion.

The roundabout, almost teasingly eccentric storytelling seems to reflect the temperament of legendary Shugendo founder En no Ozuno. Touge Oni liberally retells the ancient tale of his pilgrimage to the greater mountains of Wa, portraying him as a good-natured but elusive master, trustworthy but not inclined to divulge more than necessary. Ozuno is not, however, the main character here.

Tsurubuchi-sensei instead focuses on two of Ozuno's disciples: Miyo, an intrepid orphan rescued from sacrifice, and Zen, a grouchy young oni. Miyo is our MC protagonist, and we see the strange journey primarily through her eyes - a clever device, as her unfamiliarity with the world she traverses matches our own. As the cherry on top, a slow-growing relationship between Miyo and Zen provides an appealing dash of tsun-X-tsun romance.

Wholeheartedly recommended to everyone. Touge Oni is thoughtful, literate, heartfelt, and a guaranteed good time. 10/10

damn... one of the best findings for quite some time. And official english paperback will be available later this year :)
this one is 10/10; easily currently one of the best mangas on market for me. I did not have so much joy in a while :)

Why is it taking a long time to release a chapter?
Touge Oni runs in Harta magazine.
Harta magazine releases 10 issues per year.
No, I didn't mistype 10. It's a "monthly" that skips January and August(? I forget the other month offhand) every year.
Needless to say Harta is probably the most "quality over quantity" publication you'll find in all of manga.

tl;dr Get used to waiting.

It's even worse, Harta may run 10 per year but Touge Oni is only in 6 of them, so basically one chapter every two months.

Astonishing, the blend between historical fantasy and sci-fi is flawless. Each character is flexed out, each has a story to tell. I am beyond words, how disappointed that this is still a hidden gem.
