That's a pretty... almost textbook reason. Missing details? Really doesn't feel like something that would move somebody like Yuugi.
Actually, I think just any reason would do for a good fight lmao.

Yuugi is known for hating cowards and liars, and valuing strength. She'd appreciate that Mizuchi wanted to become a youkai rather than take the coward's way out and die, and would very much take issue with the perceived hypocrisy of Hakurei Shrine.

I guess it has to do with what suika was planning 100 years ago that she was too late to enact. It would explain why suika is helping too though I wished I understood what her plan exactly was

Just to be sure I understand correctly.

She betray humans, joining the yokai side, to protect her own life.
The Hakurei temple accept yokai's new terms of "surrender", of not attacking humans anymore.
Being a human turning yokai, she isn't protected by those new terms and get killed by the yokai.
Blame the Hakurei for stopping the war against yokai. Calling them traitors to the humans.

Did I get that right?

someone on tumblr put this in perspective better than i think this chapter does on the surface so i’ll just regurgitate some of the stuff here:
  • mizuchi was a shrine maiden just like reimu, and was a dissenter of gensokyo for allowing humans and dangerous youkai to coexist
  • im not sure if the miyadeguchi branch was absorbed into or eliminated as scapegoats by the hakurei shrine, but whatever it was basically removed them as obstacles towards the current era of gensokyo
  • suika, and by extension the oni all hate the human-youkai peace probably because of their “might makes right” beliefs. which is why they were very willing to help mizuchi out before and after her death
  • essentially mizuchi hates youkai because she believes they’re fundamentally evil, and thus hates reimu and her family for being soft to them and not going out of their way to exterminating everyone. reimu and yukari both just want this stupid ghost to shut the fuck up.
i don’t know how this is going to get resolved back to status quo ZUN style but nevermind that holy FUCK this lore is delicious

I... don't feel like we got any new information here?
Youkai are not allowed to attack Humans
Humans are not allowed to turn into Youkai
The Hakurei shrine is in charge of 'exterminating' Youkai that get to wily which helps keep a fear of youkai that they need to exist while still making sure they follow the rules
So she's mad cause she was one of the last casualties of the system she lived in before it started changing?

That part about the Mideyaguchi family working with the Hakurei threw me for a loop. Obviously auto-translation isn't 100% accurate, but when I ran the panel through multiple translators, the result was more or less "The Hakurei pinned the blame on the Mideyaguchi". This is, like, a significant discrepancy. I'd like to know the process behind translating that.

Also, was Mizuchi gonna become youkai? That doesn't really make sense to me... considering how she goes on about how she hates youkai. Then again, she befriended Yuugi, and someone above already mentioned why it made sense for the oni...

Regardless, while I do like the lore drop, Mizuchi's death and reason for vengeance felt underwhelming. To me it'd make more sense if the Hakurei had a direct hand in her death, instead of Mizuchi just watching them from afar as a spirit.

Foul Detective Satori really is the Sonic Forces of Touhou...

not really? it’s more like she’s pissed that the youkai are playing with the humans and feeding off of their fear and belief to persist when she personally perceives them as evil to humans and the like, and that hate extends to reimu and the hakurei shrine for maintaining this relationship between humans and youkai
also it seems that in other scans the hakurei may have specifically labeled the miyadeguchi branch as traitors and basically painted a target on their backs just to get rid of the opposition. which is something.
probably not the most in terms of new content but this is still some pretty deep scraps of lore we’re getting. we got some historical context for gensokyo’s founding and that it was certainly not all sunshine and rainbows for everyone involved

0% chance Reimu has any sympathy for this traumadump. She's going to say something like, "You're a failed shrine maiden, your criticism is meaningless. If you tried to find a loophole and got eaten for it you should've just stayed inside those youkai's bellies and saved me some time"

I like the indirect callback to PC-98 Reimu with the hairstyle and the traditional miko outfit.

Guys shes pissed cuz she sees reimu playing with youkais while she must the one who punish and exterminate them. And really Reimu never exerminate or execute them, she did on forbidden scrollory once(if i dont remember wrong) like whos from mainline games get punished really badly what they did. And did she really bad cuz chosing her life over dying by eating(she died at the end again anyway). Mizuichis family happened before rules or maybe creating of gensokyos border. Now gensokyo looks like a cute place where no one dies. Or even if they no one cares. Mizuichi pissed by this system how they act this is normal and they didn’t wrong and pissed to reimu who plays and get along with youkais who killed hundreds/thousand of humans and act like they nothing wrong! Shes fucking right, dont be low iq pls

Got conformation, the original Japanese text DOES say that the Mideyaguchi's got blamed while the Hakurei's got support. Even the Spanish version got this correct. Seems like there was a mistranslation.

I'm thankful, because that makes way more sense to me. I assume this means Mizuchi's own family was blamed for her death, which could imply that the Hakurei sent youkai out to kill her, though that's just my take.

Mizuichi pissed by this system how they act this is normal and they didn’t wrong and pissed to reimu who plays and get along with youkais who killed hundreds/thousand of humans and act like they nothing wrong! Shes fucking right, dont be low iq pls
Seriously? Gensokyo and its barrier were created for the sake of youkai, because their existence depends solely on humans. While they are powerful, and some are inherently malevolent, their lives are technically much, much more fragile than ours. If humans stop believing, they don't even get an afterlife, they just disappear. It's terrifying.

Do youkai not deserve life? They have thoughts, emotions, desires, and dreams just like us. Mizuchi doesn't seem to understand- or doesn't want to understand- that youkai are people too. The way Gensokyo is now is the best way for all parties.

Right. Popping in to say that there were indeed a couple embarrassing mistranslations on my part here, namely on pages 8 and 18. The chapter's been updated to fix those now.

Most notably, the part about how the Miyadeguchi were scapegoated as traitors against humanity and the Hakurei, not accomplices of the Hakurei in betraying humanity. Basically a very tunnel-visioned misreading of "betrayed humanity with the Hakurei" when it should've been "betrayed humanity and the Hakurei", which led to a couple further misinterpretations.

This reveal of Mizuchi's backstory pretty much checks out for me; the Sages and the Hakurei Shrine collaborated to create Gensokyo, but the Miyadeguchi (Mizuchi) opposed this, and as a result, the Miyadeguchi were destroyed (or in this case, scapegoated as traitors to humanity).

I wonder what Reimu is thinking of all of this, she seemed a bit quiet after Mizuchi revealed the truth behind her fate :thonk:
