The thing is, the MG is such a massive plot point for the later volumes and by having it here this early just doesn't make sense, it such a massive divergence from the original web novel.

The manga is adapted from the light novel, not the web novel, like many other manga. And the author did say that the LN and the WN are parallel to each other.

Honestly I wish the enemy was portrayed as more competent than they actually are rather than something to be mowed down like cannon fodder, it just devalues the enemy and makes the series more meh the more you notice it. Also the commander has WAY too much plot armor.

If you only ever train clearing jams while standing up, that's your muscle memory.
Many people default to their muscle memory when placed under stress.

If you survive long enough, soldiers develop new muscle memory that's more compatible with the battlefield and not training camp.

very good point. In jiu-jitsu, we're taught not to immediately let go when someone double taps, but to instead release tension, but keep the restraint, for precisely this muscle memory argument. I've also been told a story about a police man who disarmed a knife wielder only to habitually hand the knife back, and then get stabbed, which is why we're taught to throw it away instead lol.
