I didn't have many expectations going in, but man am I pleasantly surprised. There's such a good blend of using the zombified state of the protagonist in comedic and horrifying ways, and especially with the most recent chapter, I can't help but be amazed by the creativity of it all. It's definitely a bit horrific, and the gore factor has shot through the roof, but it's done in such a way that I find it to be a major plus. If you're squeamish around horror or gore in general, maybe consider something else, but if you're not, then you're in for what is shaping up to be a phenomenally refreshing entry into the isekai genre.

There is so much more to this than meets the eye.

The reason why the previous hero refuses to revive seems to be tied to some awful imagery that is implying some very dark implications in the human's side of the conflict. From what we could glimpse on, it seems like cannibalism or consumption of another sentient race is the norm within the upper echelon of the human society...

With chapter 8's cover showcasing the consumption of mermaid flesh seemingly carved off still-living mermaid specimens by humans and the hints about humanity's attempts on placing souls into different bodies in chapter 12. I think there might be a damn good reason to why the Demon Lord wants to cremate the entire world.

In Japanese folklore, mermaid(ningyo, lit. human fish) flesh is said to bestow immortality to those who consume it. This goes in line with the observable theme thus far - immortality, or rather the pursuit of immortality.

Aside from that, the MC is probably not the first reincarnator or soul taken in the previous hero's body.

It's been a while since we got a manga that does the "show, don't tell" so well.

Man, I didn't even realize what's going on in that cover until you mention it.
It got even more morbid for the fact that the other mermaid is being forced to watch.

Yup, they're being kept around like fresh seafood in a tank for display in a fish market. Asians, specifically oriental or east Asians have a fixation on keeping their seafood as fresh as possible. That means the ideal time frame in between the fish dying and being eaten by a person is kept as short as possible. That also means the fishes in question have to watch their own kind fished out of their tank and become someone else's food.

slight warning to people coming from the front page: i went in thinking the gore tag (as it usually does for mangas with more lighthearted premises) meant it was maybe once or twice, or not very detailed gore.

every other chapter includes detailed depictions of atrocities and body horror. it's not super super intense, but starting ~ch6 is where it ramps up
