What is they are another world traveler and this is part of the plan. In the original ending Waffles does save the world, he just loses his heart in the process. One person's loss for the gain of the world would be a calculated risk for stuff like this.

It's not that different from Ed making himself a fool to betray the trust he built up with his party to kick him out. It seems like it a. Always takes a long time for the party to actually get to the point of kicking him out cause he has been so pivotal for so long and b. They always regret it afterwards cause he leaves them with some parting gift that re-establishes his true character and value.

Basically this deity is shitty fir making Ed gaslight multiple heroes into trusting and betraying but not really betraying them all just to defeat the big bad at the cost of a new friend and companion. Pretty shitty of them. We've only been shown one instance of his companions looking for him nonstop afterwards and Ed himself was surprised that him getting kicked out led to the party not succeeding.

This is really sick set-up woth cool ass fights
No, there was no indication that Waffles succeeded in the original timeline. He kicked the MC out and went into the cave alone. It's reasonable to assume he failed, since this seems to be what happens when the MC follows the straightforward plan of getting himself kicked out without securing the world's future and leading his companions to victory.

Maybe they're just degenerate gamblers trying to fix a match for a massive outcome; after all, Waffles is a dark horse underdog.
I was actually thinking that the sister herself set this up, wanting Doben to fail either for personal reasons, like not wanting him in the thick of things, or just seeing him as unsuitable for the role. After all, why would the kidnapper release her unharmed? Not only is it a risk to himself, but they'd stand a better chance at breaking Doben by killing her. The last panels seem to disprove this though.

Until now I didn't even think about who kidnapped Mimilu.

Why doesn't Ed think about anything from any of the other 98 worlds?

The art makes the waiting feel more worth it.

Because for him almost 100 years have passed so until we start getting to the world's in the '80s I don't think he's going to remember them very well.

He actually received all 100 years of memories simultaneously after starting the second lap, so all the memories should be quite fresh (not to mention the 101st exiled skill he received). This is how he can still remember so much from the second world despite it being like 99 years ago from his perspective. He doesn't really need to think about the other worlds though because they all reset anyway and he will redo each and every one of them and complete them properly this time (to collect heroic books for his bookshelf). The first time through he focused on speed running getting exiled, so only now does he realize that it's likely few if any of the worlds he left ended on a happy note.

"I thought he'd given up his sword, and yet he takes down Balmoon with just his bare hands!" sounds a bit off, somehow. Like, two parts of the sentence don't really contradict each other, so "yet" feels kinda wrong.[/plain]
The other issue with this sentence that makes it feel off is tense disagreement.

It should be "...he took down Balmoon..." since the sentence starts in past tense and goes on to describe an action that is completed.

Just by the rule of story telling, the bad guy is rarely someone new, but almost always someone already introduced.
That leaves only Mr. Speaks, aka the panther (cheetah?) guy in chapter 27.1, or at least linked to him.
He's already connected to the tournament by being strong but refute to fight. So his motivation can be easily explained.

Does anyone know how far this manga/LN goes? I can't imagine they go through all 100 worlds.
Well, going by the web novel, we're currently at chapter 39...
out of 551.

But the web novel is also very simplistic. For example, a lot of the tournament is skipped, cutting straight to Doben being threatened by the mastermind. The manga (or maybe LN) provides a lot more context, worldbuilding, and character growth.
