Maybe I'm misremembering or it was mistranslated, but wasn't that key explicitly supposed to allow him to go back as well? The whole 'exile from the party' shouldn't be a requirement anymore, right?

The key was an object in pre-wish Ed's possession. When he made his wish, he didn't get to carry the key over (remember that he reached for a water bottle he no longer had while smithing the mythril).
