I'm suspecting the big guy, and not waffles, is actually the hero.
But by making Waffles so strong, he has to acknowledge him as such, waffles joins the team, and the big guys heart opens up to letting other people join him as well, such as the people acknowledged by Waffles.
Actually, alternatively, what if the sister was the hero? That would be an interesting twist, and would explain why she was targeted and killed.

God this is always so peak. Even from the first few chapters you knew it was going to be something special. This little portion dragged on a tiny bit long but the art style more than made up for it.

But Tia was the star for this one. The best facial expressions and sille chibis. As always.

I too hope that this doesn't turn into a harem manga, but instead I hope that they occasionally pick up new comrades even if only for a few worlds. While I can see Waffles being a great asset, I don't think he has the personality or the attachments to Ed that Tia did, and I don't think he world be willing to do as Tia has done and leave his world behind for too long while traveling with Ed and Tia.

Fair. it's just that ever since the panel where Ed said Waffles never smiled again, I want to keep him around and protect that smile forever. and certainly Ed can't collect comrades from every world or he'd have a small army by the end.
