Gathering skills like calligraphy might not seem useful, but it'll teach you the value of hardwork, cuz talent doesn't makes much difference.

If I had to predict how things will go, and what I hope will happen, eventually the wife's mom will do something over a line and social services will make her no longer the wife's guardian, at which point the husband will adopt her and marry the kouhai. The wife and husband will still be family and be close, and really that's what the husband wants more than the full adult relationship, which he can have with the kouhai.
