You hear stories all the time of fathers promising to marry their daughters when they come of age and stuff like that, but nobody ever holds the father accountable or accuse him of being some sort of creep.

Actually, most parents I know would definitely judge a father who did something like that--wildly irresponsible at best, creepy at worst. Childish ignorance is normal and cute, but it's a parent's job to correct it...especially on a relationship as socially significant as marriage.

Like, why would the dad not just say "Haha, kids and parents can't do that honey, but I'll always be here for you," or "Oh look, it's Elsa riding Bigfoot!" or look the other way and start whistling? It takes work to end up accidentally betrothed to your own daughter.

Obviously you naturally assume the father was just going along with her innocent, childish wishes and didn't really take it seriously. Why would you assume the same couldn't be said for some other guy doing the same thing?

Because most people aren't into incest? A random dude talking about marrying a girl is much more likely to be serious about it if he's not her father. If that wasn't obvious, it's readily backed up with data on sexual vs. physical abuse rates for fathers vs. stepfathers.

A lot of people seem to have problems with how the Dad came and told others about his life. Here are a few things you should keep in mind when arguing about that.

A: This is Japan. It's a lot more likely that they're going to believe a story about the person he's eyeing being a reincarnate than 0. Japanese people have a tendency to be HIGHLY superstitious, far more than most people would imagine.

B: Arranged marriages still happen in Japan. A lot. So for all they know he's partially joking and just in an arranged marriage with some other family and his waiting time is just the legal round about means.

C: They're drunk, they probably won't remember or they think he's drunk and don't care.

If you keep these things in mind then you may now go on to argue as you see fit.

So.... nobody is going to talk about how that kid assume that he is in a relationship with FML???? That pretty weird and creepy imo. I mean if someone who i occasionally talk to suddenly started saying it's my partner I'd be a little creep out. Like what exactly made you think we were in a relationship hahahaha.
