I've never understood the whole "I gotta keep the fact that I have history with this person a secret or a bunch of people that nobody fucking cares about is going to mildly dislike me!" Like dude, the world doesn't fucking revolve around you. You have an ex girlfriend, nobody is going to give a fuck.

I think this would have been better if they don't get back together. It was probably completely his fault for their break up. Why does she have to make the effort to get back together? He needs to realize his insecurities cost him a better life. If we could see his reaction to her get a new boyfriend. Him be depressed about it. Show the readers how he deals with it. Then finally coming to terms. Finding someone else because he screwed up his first relationship. and there is no second chance. Learn from his mistakes and treat people better than he did his ex. You can't change the past only learn from it and move forward to the future. 🤔

unfortunately for the reader, in this specific context it actually kinda does.

Japan puts a strong emphasis on public appearances. She's already getting attention for her looks, and chapter 1 implies she was rather popular back in middle school. Popular enough that their relationship was the subject of mean-spirited gossip, implied to be why they broke up. So he's already been burned by public perception once and is now trying very hard to avoid anything that would put him in the public eye again.

Do not underestimate high schoolers, especially in manga. They can be judgmental little shits, and besides gossip and ostracization there are occasions where threats of violence are on the table if the popular half of the couple has a big enough fanbase.

Chapter 1 implies that he and the FMC were the subject of cruel gossip. To the point that people thought it was "embarrassing" for the FMC to be dating someone like the MC, who was even more bookish back in middle school. Between that and the awkwardness on display here, it more or less screams that at the very least he had no confidence in himself as her partner. I wouldn't be surprised if he broke up with her out of a misaimed attempt to spare her the humiliation of getting dragged down by him, but I suspect there's more to it than that.

As for why she's the one pursuing him? Escapism. Gotta remember that manga are essentially Japanese comic books; much like seeing Superman save the day or Batman using his vast fortune to fight crime, it fulfills a fantasy for the reader. In this case, the MC is one of those "nothing special" guys (that many Japanese readers feel like they can relate to) being pursued by an attractive older woman. Hopefully there's more to it than that in terms of writing and character depth, but that's the meta reason for her pursuit of him.

And exactly why it's not a story such as what you described. Cause while that might make for a good bittersweet story... Fuckin' Hell man, it sounds depressing as fuck. Never mind all the ignorant masses who would be screaming about NTR, the MC being a beta-male, and slut-shaming the FMC...

It's all but guaranteed that he unilaterally broke up with her prior to her graduating, and he did it "out of consideration" for her sake so that she wouldn't be subjected to the ridicule and mocking he was overhearing in chapter 1.

If nothing else, it's the fact that she's clearly back to pursuing him here and now. If they both really agreed to the breakup, why would she be coming back to him now? She's had a year of high school on her own, ostensibly as someone quite popular as you pointed out, to find another relationship. That means she somehow continued holding a torch for him until he moved up past middle school. She's the one pursuing him, albeit in a way where he, in all his insecure anxiety and overthinking, sees it only as her teasing and cajoling him--so she's very much never let go of her feelings or a desire for a relationship. He got too into his own head about it, probably one-sidedly decided "she might get ridiculed as well and that would be bad so I'll save her the trouble and end things", and pushed for a breakup without actually considering her feelings.

And she likely didn't give two shits about the peanut gallery then, and doesn't now, because she's always liked him and thinks that is more important than whatever the fuck a group of dumb bystanders has to say. But he forced his way on their relationship and severed it, and now the brunt of the story will involve him being teased and cajoled by her until he puts it all together for himself and learns to have more confidence in both his own person, and respect for her opinion of him.

You are correct about your meta read, though. I'm curious if we're gonna get something compelling at some point, as to why they were together and why she likes him enough to wait around for him like this. And I just hope that it's not "because he gave her an umbrella when it was raining" or some other singular event that made her want to marry him, like you see quite often. Because that would be pure escapism, and a tired one, at that.

Hey man, we didn't come to the comment section for a well thought out and respectable discussion, we came to complain about overused clichés and writing choices we disagree with!

in rest of the world people don't care? but in Asian culture according to manga there's a thing called STATUS and ENVY so when your dating the hot girl and your a nobody, people end up thinking she can do better so you MUST have blackmailed her or something then there's envy hence all the boys want to beat the fuck out of you hence its better to keep quiet about it :aquadrink:

Lol 😆 your evil villain monologue is hilarious. It was my opinion not trying to force anything. Just a spin I would like to see. Because Japan is so fixated with wish fulfillments. They do not have stories to deal with real world problems. FYI this was taken from my life. Thank you 👍 for say my life sucks. Lol 🤣 🤣 🤣

Damn that's a rare well made comment. I agree with everything but this part.
I still mostly agree with you here, but honestly, itd be super scummy of her if it were just teasing. This chapter is good evidence she knows him well, teasing him like that in this context is pretty mean spirited to say the least. Itd be a bit validated to say she cucked him after leading him on like that. Itd be one thing if she moved on and he was chasing her, he'd be in the wrong there for sure.

It heavily implied she has strong feelings for him still and most likely missed him a lot. Her friend commenting on her unusual preparedness and MC being the reason she was prepared goes well with the "he/she completes me" trope which adds even more evidence to the obvious ending of them getting back together stronger than before.

You are correct about your meta read, though. I'm curious if we're gonna get something compelling at some point, as to why they were together and why she likes him enough to wait around for him like this. Honestly it could be as simple as "he is nice and is always helping me out and now i got too used to having him around and enjoy his company" and him just being "she is nice to me and really cute". I know people that got together at high school for similar and even weaker reasons and are still together almost 20 years later. Author has to at least show good chemistry. Two characters than dont really know each other yet being "perfect for each other" is one hell of a tired trope. Kinda boils down to bad writing tbh.

A really compelling development could be if he were bullied and basically peer pressured to dump her by envious classmates. I've also seen that irl and could be a good story to tell. Basically getting over bullying and peer pressure to realize thats just bullshit and desnt matter so go be happy with your girl. They both seem to be a good influence on each other, so the only realistic place the author has to explore is the reason why they broke up and how they mend those wounds.
(Please, author, don't let it just be the simple trope UdenEmpati said where nothing gets developed)
